Leukoplakia of the bladder in women

Causes of bladder leukoplakia

Women are more susceptible to this pathology. Women's urethra is shorter and broader than men’s. Usually, leukoplakia is diagnosed before the age of 55 or with frequent recurrences of cystitis. Accordingly, they are more likely to develop bladder inflammation due to infection through the urethra.

In this regard, the leading risk factor for the development of leukoplakia is prolonged, incompletely cured, and recurrent cystitis. Other causes of changes in the mucous membranes of the bladder include:

• hormonal disruptions
• the presence of sexually transmitted diseases
• unprotected and promiscuous sex life
• weak general and local immunity

How does leukoplakia manifest, and how is it dangerous?

The main manifestations of acute cystitis characterize this pathological condition. These include:

• increased urge to urinate
• feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
• pulling pain in the groin area
• discomfort, burning sensation, cramps when urinating
• pain in the perineal region
• rapid fatigability, general weakness.

Similar manifestations are characteristic of other urological or gynecological diseases; therefore, an in-depth diagnosis is vital in confirming the diagnosis.

In addition to the pronounced painful symptoms, leukoplakia is fraught with complications, including the appearance of neoplasms in the bladder.

Diagnostics of the leukoplakia

The initial appointment with urological surgeon Dr Sergei Liulko involves examining and questioning the patient, making it possible to identify the existing symptoms and complaints. To confirm the diagnosis, the use of additional laboratory and instrumental tests are required - diagnostic cystoscopy. Women can also pre-visit a gynecological consultation to rule out related health problems.

To identify the infection that caused cystitis, a general analysis and bacterial culture of urine allow. The main instrumental examinations that help determine leukoplakia include ultrasound diagnostics of the bladder and cystoscopy. During the latter, tissue samples (biopsy) can also be taken for histological analysis.

Bladder leukoplakia treatment

Conservative therapy with medication and local instillations (the introduction of drugs into the bladder) rarely gives good results. Removal of altered tissues is considered a more effective method of treatment.

Surgeon-urologist Dr Sergii Liulko performs several such operations, including laser ablation (impact on the affected epithelium with a laser) and transurethral resection (TUR). Both methods refer to minimally invasive endourology; they are performed using a cystoscope and additional equipment. Their main advantages are high efficiency, minimal tissue trauma, and quick patient recovery.
