Transurethral resection of the prostate

from first aid to an effective solution to the problem

Transurethral resection (abbreviated as TUR) of the prostate is one of the most effective minimally invasive endourological operations. This type of surgical intervention using a resectoscope is used for benign hyperplasia (adenoma) of the prostate gland, allowing you to get rid of existing problems with urination.

Are you interested in the possibility of performing a transurethral resection of the prostate in Kyiv? Then, make an appointment with the surgeon-urologist Sergіі Lіulko. An experienced doctor specializes in endoscopic and other minimally invasive urological operations.

INDICATIONS FOR TUR OF THE PROSTATE

Today, three main surgical methods are used to remove enlarged prostate gland areas: classical open surgery, laparoscopy through several skin punctures, and transurethral resection (TUR). However, the last endourological procedure is considered the most effective. It allows you to quickly eliminate painful symptoms in the adenoma, restore normal urination and preserve the male sexual function.

Indications for TURP of the prostate include:

  • the size of the enlarged prostate gland up to 60-80-100 cm3
  • relatively young age of the patient and the desire to maintain sexual function.
  • urinary disorders in prostate cancer
  • the presence of concomitant urological diseases, including the combination of adenoma with chronic prostatitis or bladder calculus
  • severe pathologies of the endocrine, respiratory or cardiovascular system
  • previous operations on the prostate or other organs of the small pelvis

THE ESSENCE OF TUR OF THE PROSTATE AND THE ADVANTAGES OF THE METHOD

The procedure refers to endourology, that is, endoscopic methods of surgical intervention. The urologist inserts a thin instrument (resectoscope endoscope) through the urethra. An illuminator and a camera through which the image is displayed are connected to the device. Thus, examination of the affected tissues of the prostate gland and direct surgical intervention with excision of the overgrown adenomatous tissues with a unique loop, around which plasma energy is formed, with coagulation (cauterization) of blood vessels, is carried out.

The benefits of TURP of the prostate include:

  • effective solution to problems with urination with prostate adenoma
  • the absence of incisions and punctures of the skin, that decreases the level of trauma - the operation is performed through the urethra
  • high cosmetic results: no scars and scars
  • minimal risks of postoperative complications, including the appearance of hernias
  • a decrease in the level of pain in comparison with open operations
  • minimal contraindications
  • fast recovery and results (urination recovery), as well as minimal postoperative rehabilitation.

PREPARATION, CONDUCT, AND RECOVERY AFTER TUR OF THE PROSTATE

Before transurethral resection of the prostate gland, lengthy and complex preparatory processes not require. It is enough to consult an anesthesiologist, ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs and prostate, laboratory tests of urine and blood.

If the patient is taking blood-thinning drugs, some drugs are necessary, such as aspirin, which must be canceled for ten days before the operation. When taking others, for example, warfarin, clopidogrel, Xarelto, it is necessary to cancel 4-5 days before the procedure and switch to subcutaneous administration of low molecular weight heparins, for example, Fraxiparin or Clexane.

TUR іs performed under anesthesia -spinal or general. The endoscopic operation then begins with a layer-by-layer excision (removal) of the enlarged sections of the prostate gland.

The total duration of the surgical intervention does not exceed 60 minutes. After the operation, the doctor inserts a Foley catheter through the urethra which is subsequentely removed after 2-4 days.

To monitor the patient's condition and prevent complications, the patient remains in the hospital of the surgical center for several days. The rehabilitation itself is usually straightforward and smooth. In the first days, you need to drink a lot and adhere to a sparing diet. Surgeon Sergii Liulko will give additional individual recommendations before and after the surgery.
